Don’t Let The Live365 FUD Scare You

Live365 are running ads during the static broadcasts that say something to the effect of “if you want to be able to listen to all broadcasts without restriction you need to be a preferred (i.e. paid) listener.” It is true that broadcasts are capped at 100 non-preferred listeners, but, um, let’s just say that exceeding that number of simultaneous listeners is not a problem I’ve ever had with FFG. This primarily impacts a small set of semi-pro broadcasters doing popular streams with large audiences. Once again, not a problem for the masses ;-) over here at FFG. We’re still free (as in beer and BSD.)

nb: I have no control over the placement, frequency, or content of the ads they run.

Live365 is starting to suck

I really hate having to talk about this here, but I imagine some of my listeners occasionally bump into this page, so this is the best place to do it. I’ve been broadcasting via Live365 for almost three years, and on the whole it’s been a productive relationship.

Unfortunately, they are implementing some changes that I am sure are going to drive at least some of my listenership away. As it stands already, I’m hardly broadcasting to an audience of millions, but every new hoop they make listeners jump through drives a few more of you away.

I don’t like having to log into a website just so some loser can spam me, target popups at me, and sell my info. I’m sure you don’t either. To be fair, at least some of this obnoxious intrusiveness is being forced upon them by the odious CARP regulations, which require all sorts of nosiness (my own opinion is that the usual assholes had this written into the regs precisely because it discourages listenership.)

6 month Stay of Execution for Internet Radio? Contact your Rep.

I had a hard time finding links for this one, but apparently Rep. Sensenbrenner, of Wisconsin, has introduced a bill that would delay implementation of the CARP royalty structure for 6 months while webcaster appeals are heard. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, so time is of the essence.

Station Updates

I realize that I haven’t done as many station updates lately as I had been doing in the past. I have the excuse that I lost 40 gigs of music in a hard drive crash. I’ll try to get back to regular updates over the next few days.
