Bits and Bobs

  • I’ve been quite busy over the last week or so, and I’ve neglected the blog. I’ve been running silent because I started a new job today. I am now working for Altair Engineering, on a product called PBS Pro. Standard blogging disclaimers apply (i.e. this will probably be the only time I ever mention work, directly.)
  • Anyone have any experience with SuSe? I’m a BSD-kinda guy myself, we’ll see how it goes… I’ve not actually used KDE very much.
  • If you’re tired of political “commentary” that softpedals… well, everything, take a look at the Rude Pundit — NSFW, for language. Worth a look for this classic entry, if nothing else. spotter: ssp
  • I’m really happy with SpamAssassin 3.0. Working in concert with Apple Mail, I’m basically spam-free these days.

Title: SuSE

I used SuSE a few (5?) years ago, it seemed like RedHat with a few German translation goofs. It's RPM based, I liked it.

They're running SUSE at uni. It's as crappy/good as any other Linux from my point of view.
I've heard more competent people say that it's good for beginners because it's got a nice and comprehensive configuration tool and considered too pre-configured by 'pros' who like having all the choices by default and feeling smart about themselves for making them.

I've had to install SUSE 9.1 on the work laptop. The installer is nice, at least so far. KDE, I'm less convinced by. It tracks (far too closely) the UI of MS Windows.

Are you working in Troy? Because, I live in Royal Oak, practically a stone's throw away.

Yep, I'm at the headquarters, on Big Beaver just west of John R.

Dave – I'm *so* with you on KDE looking to much like Windows. There's a Mac theme, which makes things a little more bearable.
