Site trivia

Not blogging about blogging, but blogging about under the hood site arcana, which is probably just as bad…

There are two changes — one’s a bug fix and the other is an efficiency increase (maybe.) (205 words)

  1. The bug fix: Somewhere along the line last week, I was making some minor syndication feed changes and I managed to completely bollix up the dates in my RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds. I think I was testing things and then we decided to go out for ice cream and I stopped in mid-edit and it’s all gone hazy… hey, it’s August. Whatever the hell I did, I finished up with an 8-digit timezone offset in my feed dates (i.e. WTF?) Fixed. [ Thanks, Sam :) ]
  2. The presumptive efficiency increase: I’m now using Tatsuhiko Miyagawa’s Gzip plugin for Blosxom to send compressed content to browsers and aggregators that support it. (Which doesn’t, unfortunately, include Safari yet.) I’m doing this on a trial basis — there’s a slight increase in processing overhead and page render time, and I don’t know whether or not the benefits for the majority of people visiting here and pulling the feed justify doing it, for sure. Going by my logs, I have very few modem-based visitors, and they would be the primary benficiaries. Until I build my new server box (at least a couple of months off), I’m not exactly swimming in excess CPU power here.

Speak roughly to your little VAX, And boot it when it crashes; It knows that one cannot relax Because the paging thrashes! Wow! Wow! Wow! I speak severely to my VAX, And boot it when it crashes; In spite of all my favorite hacks My jobs it always thrashes! Wow! Wow! Wow!
